Support Hunger Action Month this September!

by Allison Weber Manager, Communication and Donor Stewardship, Feeding America

September is Hunger Action Month™ – the Feeding America® network’s nationwide awareness campaign designed to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger. The campaign brings attention to the reality of hunger in the United States and promotes ways for individuals and organizations to get involved in the movement to help end hunger.

After all, there are still 1 in 8 people struggling with hunger in America. Feeding America’s latest research demonstrates that hunger exists in every county in America. Additionally, people currently facing hunger are finding it more and more difficult to provide their families with the nutrition they need.

The 2018 Hunger Action Month campaign asks people to consider the universal feeling of an empty stomach, and of how on an empty stomach, we cannot reach our full potential. The icons of an empty plate and an uncharged battery will function as visual representations of what empty stomachs lead to: hunger.

Feeding America welcomes our partners, supporters and friends to engage in the campaign in September. You can use our Hunger Action Month Toolkit for Partners to take simple actions that will generate awareness of the issue, while highlighting your commitment to solving hunger.

  • Social Activation: Write what you “can’t do on an empty stomach” on the printable paper plate poster in the toolkit; take a picture holding the plate; post the image to your social media channels with a message about how you can help end hunger in your community, using #HungerActionMonth and tag @FeedingAmerica. Encourage others to take the same action using a disposable paper plate to help spread the word.
  • Distribute Materials: Print out the flyers and table tents in the toolkit and post them around your office, school and other locations to raise awareness of Hunger Action Month and the hunger issue.
  • Hunger Action Day: Hunger Action Day®, which is the second Thursday in September this year (September 13), is a day where efforts across the country are focused for greater impact. Post the social media assets in the toolkit on your channels along with the suggested post copy on Hunger Action Day or any day in September to spur your followers to take action.

Please join Feeding America as we engage the nation in Hunger Action Month. Use the resources in our Hunger Action Month Toolkit for Partners to lend your voice to the movement!
